About This Lesson

Sanctuaries of Silence takes you on an immersive journey with acoustic ecologist Gordon Hempton in the Hoh Rain Forest in Washington State, one of the quietest places in North America. Students will be viewing a film about Gordon Hempton, an acoustic ecologist and researcher who has been studying the impacts of sound and silence for 35 years. In this lesson, students learn about how increasing noise pollution and the loss of silence in our modern world significantly impacts people as well as the environment. Reflective writing prompts are also included for students to demonstrate their understanding of the story.
