About This Lesson
In this lesson, students will read a passage from a poem written by a former slave. Students will note unfamiliar words, discover meaning of unfamiliar words using context clues, dictionaries, and/or thesauruses, and replace unfamiliar words with familiar ones. The student will also have an opportunity to think about what they already know about a concept, place, person, culture, and so on, and share their knowledge with a wider audience.
