About This Lesson

Children of Heaven introduces students to the people and culture of Iran. This engaging film that children love is a great tool for building empathy and broadening horizons through global education.

Children of Heaven is a contemporary Iranian film about families, compassion, moral responsibilities and issues of limited resources. The film shows the inner strength we have when faced with adversity.

This lesson plan has three sections. The first section is about map-reading and human geography. It explores Iran’s geography in the context of neighboring countries and gives students practice in map-making and giving directions.  It includes a student activity using a map or atlas. It also includes a handout on The Flag of Iran – Symbols and Meaning.

The second part of the lesson focuses on why Iran is called an “Islamic Republic,” introducing students to Islam’s history and value system. This lesson seeks to help students understand the nature of this major world religion and the way it affects Iranian lives. This section includes a printable worksheet for students about their own Values to Live By.

This lesson plan also includes a FAQ about Islam and extension activities.

This lesson works best with the film but can also work on its own.  Get information on where to find the film from the Children of Heaven page on our website.
