About This Lesson

Geographic Isolation and Ethnocentrism: Creating an Isolated Civilization

In this activity, students study physical feature maps to locate a geographic location that would keep a society isolated. They use the attached map to label their location and write a summary.

I created this short assignment to introduce the concept of ethnocentrism, China, and to review the geographic factors that cause barriers to trade, contact, and expansion. My students completed this activity after learning how the Himalayan Mountains served as a barrier to the Mauryan and Gupta Empires.
