About This Lesson
Augmented Classroom (ARC Geometry)
Activity Time: 30 minutes
Lesson Objectives
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
- Define and identify key mathematical terms: numeral, digit, whole number, sum, total, add, and difference.
- Demonstrate understanding of place value with 2- and 3-digit numbers.
- Accurately add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers.
- Connect addition and subtraction to geometric shapes by counting vertices, edges, and faces.
Materials
- ARC Geometry App (web for 2/D3D or mobile for AR experience)
- Geometry markers (printed if students use mobile devices for AR experience)
- Worksheets for addition and subtraction practice
- Whiteboard and markers
- Manipulatives or building blocks for visualizing 3D shapes
Lesson Activities
1. Introduction (5 minutes)
- Discuss the number system and introduce key terms: numeral, digit, whole number.
- Ask students to give examples for each term.
- Review addition and subtraction vocabulary: sum, total, add, difference.
2. Place Value Review (5 minutes)
- Demonstrate place value with 2- and 3-digit numbers.
- Use examples to show how digits represent tens, hundreds, and ones.
3. Guided Practice: Addition & Subtraction (5 minutes)
- Distribute worksheets or use the ARC Geometry App to create visual addition/subtraction problems.
- Encourage students to solve problems step-by-step using place value.
4. Geometry Integration (5-7 minutes)
- Launch ARC Geometry App and invite students via join code/link (for PRO account).
- Explore 2D shapes and 3D shapes created from 2D nets.
- Count vertices, edges, and faces.
- Pose addition/subtraction questions:
- “How many edges are there if we combine a cube and a pyramid?”
- “If we remove a face from this cube, how many faces remain?”
- Record totals on the board to show the connection between geometry and arithmetic.
5. Multiplayer Math Game - PRO account (5-7 minutes)
- Start the ARC Geometry “Math Game” for addition and subtraction.
- Students are automatically sorted into teams.
- Offer incentives for fastest completion (1st, 2nd, 3rd prizes).
- Monitor students’ teamwork and problem-solving strategies.
6. Conclusion & Assessment (2-3 minutes)
- Recap key vocabulary and concepts learned.
- Ask students to explain one thing they learned about combining numbers with shapes.
- Collect worksheets or review in-app results to assess understanding.
Differentiation Strategies
- For struggling learners: Use manipulatives and visual aids to demonstrate addition/subtraction. Provide one-on-one support during game play.
- For advanced learners: Introduce larger numbers or multi-step word problems combining arithmetic with geometry.
Assessment
- Formative assessment through student responses during discussion.
- Observation during ARC Geometry activities and multiplayer game.
- Review worksheet and in-app results to check accuracy in addition/subtraction.
Extensions
- Assign home practice using ARC Geometry shapes to create addition/subtraction problems.
- Challenge students to create their own 3D structures and calculate vertices, edges, and faces.
